These yachts will face off against Svea, owned by Swedish entrepreneur Niklas Zennström, at the highly anticipated Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez in September. Svea, at 143 feet, is the longest J ever built and has dominated the race scene since its launch in 2017. Lionheart, another historic vessel built to original plans, is also expected to be a crowd favorite.
A Rich History, A New Legacy
In the 1930s, ten original J-Class yachts competed on the regatta circuit. Sadly, only three British boats survived, while the American fleet was scrapped. However, a renewed interest in the J-Class was sparked in the 1980s when stateside heiress Elizabeth Meyer restored Shamrock V and Endeavour. Shamrock V, originally built for Sir Thomas Lipton, remains the most famous of the Js and has recently undergone a four-and-a-half-year restoration, ensuring its place in sailing history.
Restorations of these yachts have been a delicate balance between preserving their original lines and incorporating modern engineering. This fusion of old and new has resulted in larger interiors and improved operating systems, while still maintaining the visual allure of the J-Class.

While the J-Class yachts have proven their versatility as cruising vessels, with some sailing thousands of miles, the central focus remains on racing. Wick Hillege, a naval architect involved in the refit and rebuild of several Js, believes that racing is where these yachts truly shine. "We ensure that their maximum performance potential is achieved," he says. The replicas, with their advanced aluminum hulls and composite rigging, may be faster, but it is the slender hulls and immense sail plans that capture the essence of the J-Class.
As the J-Class fleet continues to grow, with a replica of the 1930 America's Cup defender Yankee currently under construction, the future looks bright for these iconic sailing yachts. The Mediterranean will undoubtedly provide the perfect stage for these majestic vessels to showcase their beauty, speed, and rich heritage.
